PoE is particularly efficient because it delivers both power and video data through a single cable, reducing installation complexity.

Consistent video quality is another strength, as wired connections experience minimal latency and no signal degradation. However, wired cameras require professional installation, as cables must be routed through walls and ceilings. They also become difficult to relocate once installed, and power outages can disrupt their operation unless backup power systems are in place.

Wireless cameras transmit video data over Wi-Fi rather than through physical cables. It’s important to note that “wireless” typically refers only to data transmission-many wireless cameras still require a power outlet connection. Truly cable-free models run on rechargeable batteries.

A complete security camera system consists of several interconnected components working together to capture, store, and display surveillance footage.

Cameras

The cameras themselves are the most visible component of any surveillance system. Several types serve different purposes. Dome cameras feature discreet, dome-shaped casings and are commonly used indoors. Bullet cameras have a cylindrical shape ideal for outdoor mounting and long-range monitoring. PTZ cameras (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) can rotate horizontally and vertically while zooming in on specific areas, offering flexible coverage. Thermal cameras detect heat signatures rather than visible light, making them effective in complete darkness or through fog and smoke.

Recording devices: NVR vs. DVR

Recording devices store captured footage for later review. The two main types are Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) and Network Video Recorders (NVRs).

DVR systems convert analog footage into a digital format and work with traditional CCTV cameras connected via coaxial cables. Each camera must connect directly to the DVR, and the recorder handles all video processing. DVR systems are generally more affordable but offer less flexibility.

NVR systems work with IP cameras and process video data that has already been encoded at the camera level. They typically deliver better image quality and native audio support but come at a higher price point.

Monitors and viewing devices

Security footage needs to be displayed somewhere for monitoring. Traditional setups use dedicated monitors in a security control room, while modern systems enable viewing on smartphones, tablets, and computers.
