India’s education landscape is undergoing a massive digital transformation. With the National Education Policy 2020 as its foundation and the Digital India campaign as its driving force, the country is rapidly integrating technology into classrooms across urban and rural settings. From interactive whiteboards to AI-powered learning platforms, smart education in India represents a convergence of policy vision, technological innovation, and pedagogical reform aimed at creating equitable, accessible, and quality education for over 250 million students.

Technologies enhancing smart education in India

Modern Indian classrooms are increasingly equipped with a range of digital tools designed to make learning more interactive and engaging. Classroom computers serve as the backbone of digital education, enabling students to access online resources, practice coding, and develop essential computer literacy skills from an early age.

Interactive whiteboards and smart boards have replaced traditional chalkboards in thousands of schools. These touch-sensitive digital displays combine the functionalities of traditional boards with touchscreen technology, allowing teachers to write, draw, display multimedia content, and access online resources in a dynamic learning environment. Features like multi-touch support, wireless connectivity, built-in operating systems, and pre-installed educational software make these boards powerful teaching tools.

Wireless microphones ensure that teachers can be heard clearly even in large classrooms, while mobile devices like tablets and smartphones extend learning beyond classroom walls. Students can access educational apps, e-books, and video lectures anytime and anywhere, supporting the shift toward personalized and self-paced learning.

Digital video content transforms abstract concepts into visual experiences. Animated explanations, virtual experiments, and documentary-style lessons help students grasp complex topics more effectively. Educational games add an element of fun to learning, using gamification principles to improve engagement and retention, particularly in subjects like mathematics, science, and language skills.

Digital India and web education

India has established itself as a global leader in information and communication technology, and this expertise is being channeled into educational transformation. The Digital India Campaign, launched to transform the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, has become a catalyst for educational reform.

The relationship between technology and education in India is bidirectional. While education plays a critical role in building the digital workforce, technology simultaneously improves educational processes and outcomes. This symbiotic connection means that investments in educational technology create a positive feedback loop, where better-educated graduates contribute to technological advancement, which in turn enhances educational delivery.

Web-based education has expanded access dramatically. Students in remote villages can now access the same quality content as their urban counterparts through platforms designed for low-bandwidth environments. The expansion of internet connectivity through initiatives like BharatNet, combined with falling data costs, has created unprecedented opportunities for digital learning.

National Educational Technology Forum (NETF)

NEP 2020 envisioned the creation of an autonomous body called the National Educational Technology Forum to serve as a platform for free exchange of ideas on using technology in education. NETF facilitates decision-making on the deployment and use of technology by providing educational leaders, state and central governments, and other stakeholders with the latest research and best practices.

Core functions of NETF

According to the Ministry of Education, NETF serves several critical functions. It provides independent evidence-based advice to government agencies on technology-based interventions and builds intellectual and institutional capacities in educational technology. The forum envisions strategic thrust areas, articulates new directions for research and innovation, and lays down standards for content, technology, and pedagogy in online and digital teaching.

NETF also maintains a regular flow of authentic data from multiple sources, including educational technology innovators, and engages with researchers to analyze this information. It conducts regional and national conferences to gather inputs from researchers, entrepreneurs, and practitioners. Additionally, it identifies technological interventions for improving teaching-learning processes, supporting teacher development, and streamlining educational administration.

One crucial responsibility involves categorizing emergent technologies based on their potential and estimated timeframe for disruption, periodically presenting this analysis to the Ministry of Education. NETF also serves as the guiding body for the National Digital Educational Architecture (NDEAR), which acts as the blueprint for creating unified national digital infrastructure to catalyze the entire education ecosystem.

Key initiatives under NEP 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 recognizes that new circumstances require new initiatives. The policy calls for carefully designed pilot studies to determine how benefits of online education can be maximized while addressing potential drawbacks.

Digital infrastructure and platforms

The DIKSHA platform (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing), launched in September 2017, has become central to India’s digital education strategy. Adopted by all 36 states and union territories, CBSE, NIOS, and Kendriya Vidyalayas, DIKSHA recorded over 5.8 billion sessions and 292,000 live content pieces by July 2022. The platform offers e-textbooks, lesson plans, and teacher training modules with approximately 70% rural penetration.

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) serves as India’s national MOOC platform. With over 5.15 crore enrolments and 16,530+ courses, SWAYAM allows universities to permit up to 40% credit transfer. SWAYAM Plus, launched in February 2024, offers industry-integrated online courses in AI, Data Analytics, and Healthcare.

Virtual labs and digital libraries

To provide hands-on learning experiences without requiring physical equipment, NEP 2020 promotes virtual labs. These offer over 900 virtual labs and 1,200+ experiments across STEM subjects, allowing students to understand complex concepts through realistic simulations. The National Digital Library of India hosts a vast collection of 8 crore+ digital academic resources in video, text, and audio formats.

Addressing the digital divide

NEP 2020 acknowledges that benefits of online education cannot be leveraged unless the digital divide is eliminated. The policy calls for concerted efforts through initiatives like Digital India and making affordable computing devices available. PM eVIDYA broadcasts DIKSHA content on 12 DTH channels to reach students without internet access, while QR-coded textbooks and downloadable content on SD cards extend reach to low-connectivity areas.

Teacher training and online assessment

Teachers require suitable training to become effective online educators. The policy recognizes that a good traditional classroom teacher may not automatically excel in online settings. NISHTHA (National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers Holistic Advancement), launched in 2019, transitioned online through DIKSHA in 2020, with subsequent versions focusing on secondary school teachers and foundational literacy and numeracy.

The policy also addresses online assessments, acknowledging challenges including limitations on question types, handling network disruptions, and preventing malpractice. Blended learning models combining online and offline instruction are being promoted to leverage the best of both approaches.

NEP’s focus on digital literacy and EdTech

Digital literacy has become a foundational skill under NEP 2020. The policy proposes incorporating AI and coding into school curriculum starting from Class 6, aiming to equip students with essential skills for the digital age. School children will develop digital literacy, coding abilities, and computational thinking from a young age through subjects like Artificial Intelligence and Design Thinking.

Coding and computational thinking

The curriculum now introduces programming languages and coding techniques as essential skills. Students learn HTML5, Python, and JavaScript in higher grades, fostering deeper computational thinking. Programs aligned with NEP 2020 aim to prepare students with 21st-century skills including critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. CBSE has integrated ICT, AI, Coding, and Robotics curriculum for classes 1-10, transforming computer labs into modern AI and robotics learning spaces.

Artificial Intelligence integration

Topics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analysis, and 3D machining are being integrated into undergraduate education to train industry-ready professionals. The National Research Foundation promotes high-quality research in AI through three approaches: advancing core AI research, developing application-based solutions, and establishing international collaborations for global challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and climate change.

Opportunities for the EdTech sector

NEP 2020 has created significant opportunities for the EdTech sector. With over 100,000 schools incorporating digital tools by 2024, the policy mandates technology-enabled learning and ensures digital literacy is a core educational component. The development of e-content in regional languages addresses linguistic diversity, ensuring that students across India can learn in their mother tongue while accessing quality digital resources.

Virtual classrooms have become increasingly sophisticated, enabling interactive sessions through video conferencing, real-time quizzes, and collaborative whiteboard activities. Teachers can connect with students remotely while maintaining engagement through polls, breakout rooms, and screen-sharing capabilities. This infrastructure proved invaluable during pandemic-related school closures and continues to support hybrid learning models.

Budget allocations and implementation

India’s commitment to educational transformation is reflected in its budget allocations. For FY 2024-25, the Department of School Education and Literacy received a record ₹73,498 crore allocation, representing a 19.56% increase over the previous year. The Department of Higher Education received ₹47,619.77 crore, with dedicated funding for initiatives like SWAYAM Plus, PM-Vidyalaxmi, and digital infrastructure development.

The PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme aims to strengthen over 14,500 schools showcasing NEP 2020 components, with a total project cost of ₹27,360 crore over five years. These investments demonstrate the government’s commitment to building a robust digital education ecosystem that can serve India’s vast and diverse student population.
